Repurposing Cork into Planters | Upcycling

How cute are these mini cork planters? One of the first steps to reducing your waste is taking a look at your trash and seeing where you can cut back or what you can change. We have been on our lower waste (we never say zero waste, we aren’t about setting impossible goals) journey just a little over two years. We are definitely not perfect and still have some trash. We have been collecting our wine corks for a while, hoping there was something useful we could do with them.

Finally, the other day, we decided to try to make mini planters. Looking through the corks we had held onto we noticed something. We must drink a lot more “cheap” wine than we realized. There were so many plastic corks. Those went into the recycling bin. Honestly we never really thought about what kind of cork was in the wine bottle when choosing. Moving forward, we will take that into consideration when selecting a wine for the night.

Corks are considered a sustainable option due to the tree not having to be cut down for their production. They also are biodegradable and compostable!

To make these planters we didn’t do much other than using a drill to drill a hole to our preferred size. Dropped the tiniest amount of dirt in it and popped our baby succulents and cacti into the hole. These would make great gifts or keep them for yourself!
