The Sad Truth about the Orphan Bananas

IMG_4381.jpg

On our last grocery trip, we bought twenty lonely, overripe bananas! Did you know that 1.4 million bananas are thrown away every day? According to the World Wildlife Foundation, in the US alone, wasted food generates the equivalent of 37 million cars’ worth of greenhouse gas emissions. Yikes! As it was the end of the day when we went grocery shopping, if we did not buy these, they most likely would have ended up in the landfill!

What can we do with our 20 bananas? Freeze them! Frozen bananas are perfect for adding to smoothies. You can also blend 1 ½ frozen bananas with a little bit of non-dairy milk for a great, healthy ice cream alternative! Top with walnuts, peanuts, dark chocolate chips, some fresh fruit....honestly any combo I have tried is delicious! We also use the frozen bananas and some peanut butter to fill our dog’s Kong as a treat and he loves it.

Loose bananas are also perfect for baking some banana bread, putting on top of some delicious, hot pancakes, or eating with some overnight oats.

Do you buy the orphan bananas? Whatever you end up doing with the banana, make sure you compost the peel!
